The former Barcelona man, 21, was brought off midway through the first half for Brazilian midfielder Oscar after landing awkwardly following an aerial duel.

When asked how serious the injury was, and if Romeu would be fit to travel, Benitez replied: "He is going to London and then the doctor will have to check and say what is going on.

"But when a player leaves the pitch limping, to have to go to Japan right now I think it will be difficult for him. At the moment he must stay with the doctor and make sure everything is fine.

Although he will be without the young Spaniard for his side's trip to Japan, Benitez will welcome back Jon Obi Mikel who served the first of his three game Premier League ban at the Stadium of Light.
