FC Utrecht missed the chance to move level on points with third-placed Vitesse Arnhem in the Eredivisie after a surprise 4-0 thrashing at RKC Waalwijk.
Utrecht went into the contest having won their their last three games, including a 5-1 beating of Willem II last weekend, but they were second best at the Mandemakers Stadion.
Teddy Chevalier opened the scoring after five minutes but it was not until late on that RKC confirmed their superiority. Florian Jozefzoon made it 2-0 with 16 minutes to go and there was still time for Imad Najah and Sander Duits to get their names on the scoresheet.
NEC moved up to fifth after hitting back to beat Heracles 3-2 in Nijmegen.
A brace from Samuel Armenteros overturned Rick ten Voorde's opener for the hosts and put Heracles in position to record their fourth win of the season. But Leroy George equalised with 19 minutes to go before Ten Voorde won it with his second of the contest.
ADO Den Haag failed to climb alongside Ajax and Feyenoord on 18 points after being held at home by AZ Alkmaar.
Erik Falkenburg put AZ ahead after 22 minutes but goals either side of the break from Charlton Vicento and Danny Holla, the latter from the penalty spot, put ADO in charge. United States international Jozy Altidore levelled for the visitors after 64 minutes but neither side could find a winner.
Rock-bottom Willem II's misery continued with a 4-1 thrashing at improving VVV-Venlo. VVV registered their first win of the season at AZ last weekend and made it two wins from two with another impressive display.
Marcel Seip gave them a half-time lead and quickfire goals at the start of the second period from Robert Cullen and Brian Linssen effectively settled the contest. Oguzhan Turk made it 4-0 before Virgil Misidjan netted a 74th-minute consolation.
