Wigan midfielder Jordi Gomez has had the red card he received in the 1-0 defeat to Sunderland last weekend rescinded by the Football Association.

Gomez, 27, was controversially sent off by referee Howard Webb, leaving the Latics furious at a decision that they believe contributed to their defeat.

After lodging an appeal, video evidence as well as a personal letter from manager Roberto Martinez sent to the FA, ultimately proved successful.

"It does not bring back the time lost when Jordi had to leave the field but I am delighted that we can draw a line under this incident and that Jordi is available for us on Saturday," Martinez told the club's official website.

Gomez signed for Wigan from Espanyol in 2009, having previously worked with Martinez the season before, while on loan at Swansea.
