Zlatan Ibrahimovic does not believe that his former Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi deserves to win this year's FIFA Ballon d'Or.

Messi, 25, the current holder of the award and three-time winner, hit a remarkable 72 goals for his club last season and is widely recognised as the best footballer in the world.

However, Ibrahimovic, 30, believes Barca's disappointing season last term, that saw them miss out on the Champions League and La Liga, should count against the player - while he also thinks someone else should get the chance to win the accolade.

"Messi had a fantastic season but he has not won that much and he has already won the Ballon d'Or three times," he told Eurosport.

"It depends whether you reward an individual or a collective work.

"Xavi is still playing at a high level, Iniesta also had a great season, they won Euro 2012 while Messi has not won anything, just the King's Cup. Messi has won the Ballon d'Or three times, it's now someone else's turn to win it."

The Ballon d'Or, which was merged with the World Player of the Year award in 2010, will be awarded on January 7.
