James, 42, who trained with the club on Thursday, signed before Friday's 12pm deadline, meaning he is eligible for the visit of Walsall on Saturday and will compete with Shwan Jalal for the No. 1 spot.

The former England international will be reunited with manager Paul Groves, who was a coach during his time at Portsmouth.

And James revealed he was persuaded to join the League One club by Groves, as well as former Pompey team-mate Richard Hughes.

"The experience I had with Grovesy at Portsmouth was invaluable as coming in to a manager who I had no idea about would be scary. I understand the guy, I like his methodology and I like the way he thinks," he told the club's official website.

"Hughes joined and was speaking very positively about the club which is always a good indicator when joining a team.''

James will also be reunited with his old Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp, who currently holds an advisory role with the Cherries.

The goalkeeper had been without a club after being released by Bristol City in the summer.
