Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez has admitted he does not know when he will be fit again, six weeks after undergoing ankle surgery.

When Gomez, 27, underwent the surgery, club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt predicted that he would be back in training within three weeks and back on the pitch in six.

But the Germany international is still sidelined and fighting to make his Bayern comeback, with his rehabilitation not proving as swift as was hoped.

"There has never been a laid-out plan. It depends on how the foot reacts," he told TZ newspaper. "Right now it is good. I am on the treadmill, and have started running on a regular basis. And before that I was cycling a lot, to work on my stamina."

However, it has not been plain sailing for Gomez and he is frustrated at not being able to place a time frame on his return to action.

"It's not I get on treadmill, run for an hour and everything is ok. I am getting there, but slowly," he said. "I don't know when I will get back into team training. I am very impatient and can't estimate how much time my foot needs. I just don't know where I am."

With the striker on the sidelines, his place has been taken by summer signing Mario Mandzukic, who has impressed by scoring in every league match so far.

Yet Gomez was given some hope that his place will be waiting for him when he finally returns from injury.

"When Mario gets back, he will not have to wait for his chance," Bayern manager Jupp Heynckes said a few weeks ago.
