New Zealand up and running with win

New Zealand began their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-0 win over New Caledonia at Stade Numa-Daly Magenta.

Shane Smeltz, who plies his domestic trade at Perth Glory, opened the scoring in the 12th minute of the Oceania group match.

Chris Wood, of West Brom, doubled the lead five minutes before the half-time whistle to wrap up an opening triumph for New Zealand.

In the group's other match, Solomon Islands emerged victorious against Tahiti as they recorded a 2-0 win at Lawson Tama Stadium.

Henry Fa'arodo netted on 16 minutes before Himson Teleda grabbed the second goal of the game for Jacob Moli's team after Nicolas Vallar had been sent off for the away nation.
