Del Piero set for Sydney
Alessandro Del Piero is set to confirm his move to Sydney FC after calling a press conference in Turin on Wednesday.
Sydney released an official statement on Friday claiming a deal had been struck with Del Piero, 37, but it then appeared the player was having second thoughts as he considered other offers from Swiss club FC Sion, Scottish champions Celtic and newly-promoted Southampton.
Del Piero's agent, his older brother Stefano, had said the move was still under discussion, telling Sky Italia: "Sydney remains a possibility. There are a few issues that we still need to confirm and we'll continue talking."
It seems those talks were successful, with an announcement expected to be made at the press conference in Turin. Del Piero is believed to have signed for AUS$2 million per season, a record for a player in Australia.
He is expected to be in Sydney to meet his new team-mates within the next two weeks.
