PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Timbers have hired Caleb Porter as their head coach for the 2013 season.
The 37-year-old Porter has spent the past seven seasons at Akron and will stay with the college program through this season. He recently served as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 national team.
Timbers general manager Gavin Wilkinson made the announcement Wednesday.
The Timbers fired coach John Spencer on July 9 and Wilkinson took over for the rest of the season. The team is in last place in the MLS Western Conference.

With Caleb Porter's Olympic failures fresh in the mind, ESPN FC's Jeff Carlisle wonders if the Timbers made the right hire to coach next season.
