Del Piero, 37, left Juventus having spent 19 years with the Bianconeri and has been assessing his options all summer as he has had offers from the Middle East and MLS.

However, it seems he is set to accept the contract from Sion with the club's Sporting Director Marco telling Sky Italia on Tuesday: "We presented the project Sion, telling him what the club are trying to do and we listened to the ideas of Del Piero on his future.

"After the arrival of important Gattuso, the club wants to try to do something special, first in Switzerland and then the Champions League."

"We expect to close tomorrow or the next day when he comes to a decision. What have we done to try to convince him? Gattuso has helped and then the proximity as Switzerland is close to Turin and can give him the opportunity to win without leaving Europe."
