Wayne Rooney says Manchester United will be looking for revenge when they kick off their Premier League campaign at Everton.

The return to Goodison Park will complete a decade of Premier League football for Rooney but he believes his last meeting with his former club denied United a 20th title.

They led twice against Everton at Old Trafford in April, but only drew 4-4 as, after having an eight-point advantage over Manchester City, United ended the season as runners-up to their rivals. "That game last season probably did cost us the league, so we have an incentive to get the three points," Rooney said.

United won 1-0 at Goodison Park last season when Rooney operated as a central midfielder but the Merseysider is warning it will not be easy to earn another victory.

"It is a really tough first game," he added. "Over the last few years, Everton have not started well in the league. But, as an Evertonian, I know, both growing up and playing for them, when Manchester United go to Goodison, the whole place is lifted and the fans make it far more difficult."

As he approaches his 27th birthday, Rooney hopes he is only at the halfway point of his career.

"I'm still fairly young," he said. "I feel young anyway. It's great to have played in the Premier League for ten years. It does feel like a long time ago, though. I just hope I can play for another 10 years and have as much enjoyment as I did in my first ten."
