Ajax midfielder Vurnon Anita's father has confirmed that his son has received an offer from Newcastle - but stressed that discussions between the parties have not been concluded.

Speaking to Ajaxshowtime.com, he said: "We are not sure yet. Vurnon first wants to talk to the head coach of Newcastle United [Alan Pardew]."

Despite declining the offer of a contract extension from Ajax, the 23-year-old Anita has not ruled out remaining at the Amsterdam Arena, where he has been for 13 years.

His father explained that a bigger consideration than money was knowing how Pardew intended to use him, saying: "Newcastle United and Ajax are well agreed, but Vurnon wants to know what the plans of the head coach of Newcastle United are with him.

"Does he want Vurnon for right-back? Or for left-back? Or in midfield? These are important questions for Vurnon in making his choice. On these questions, he has no answer."

Meanwhile, Toon goalkeeper Tim Krul has backed Anita to do well should he decide to move to Tyneside, saying: "He is a player that can play in multiple positions and put to good use.

"I have played with him at youth level for Holland, and he is tough enough."
