Yanga-Mbiwa, 23, came through the club's youth academy, enjoying an impressive season last time around as the club lifted the Ligue 1 title. His efforts saw him linked with the likes of AC Milan and Newcastle, but Montpellier president Louis Nicollin doesn't want to see another one of his stars leave the club, after Olivier Giroud departed for Arsenal.

Nicollin told French press agency AFP: "For now, he is here even if we have to clench our buttocks until August 31. When we met in late May, he wished to stay and be the captain of Montpellier in the Champions League. So we have officially registered our staff with him among them."

Defender, Yanga-Mbiwa, has represented France eight times at under-21 level, but is yet to earn senior cap, however, he has been called up for their friendly against Uruguay on August 15.

"You cannot sell the captain of the champions of France and the future defender of Les Bleus for six million euros. I am very proud to have been contacted by Milan, but we cannot do anything. Apart from an offer we cannot refuse, which was not the case from Milan, he will stay."

Montpellier get their title defence underway on Friday night with a home fixture against Toulouse.
