Big spending Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala took control of their tie against Vitesse Arnhem, running out 2-0 winners. Goals from Oleg Shatov and Fyodr Smolov ensured they would take an advantage to the Netherlands.
Dutch side Heerenveen should be able to start planning for the next round after thrashing Rapid Bucuresti 4-0 on their own turf. Filip Djuricic scored twice before Marten de Roon and Samir Fazli completed the scoring.
And Steve McClaren's FC Twente are also well placed after Leroy Fer and Nacer Chadli hit the back of the net for a 2-0 win over Mlada Boleslav.
St Patrick's are staring at Europa League elimination after suffering a 3-0 defeat at home to Hannover. The Dublin side were up against it almost immediately after Leon Andreasen scored. Christian Pander doubled the visitors' lead in the 68th minute while Didier Ya Konan sealed an impressive win 10 minutes from time.

A deflected injury-time strike denied Dundee United a memorable victory against Dinamo Moscow as the game ended 2-2. United took the lead against the run of play when Willo Flood drove home before Igor Semshov headed the Russians level. Keith Watson looked to have earned United the advantage but Alexander Kokorin silenced the home crowd with a 25-yard strike that looped into the net off a defender.
Apoel Nicosia, quarter-finalists in the Champions League last season, had to come from behind to win 2-1 at home to Aalesund but will have work to do in Norway next week. Tramaine Stewart scored early for the visitors but goals in each half from Mario Sergio and Efstathios Aloneftis turned the game in the Cypriots' favour.
Viktoria Plzen, Champions League debutants in 2011-12, have a giant stride in the final qualifying round after winning 2-0 at Ruch Chorzow. David Stipek and Michal Duris both scored in the last 11 minutes to earn victory.
