Brazil have suffered a major blow to their Olympic hopes with the news that first-choice goalkeeper Rafael Cabral will miss the tournament with a right elbow problem.

Rafael, 22, suffered the injury in training at Arsenal's London Colney training centre on Monday and a scan has shown trauma to the elbow resulting in pain and reduced movement.

Brazil team doctor Jose Luis Runco told Globo Esporte: "He suffered a blow to the elbow and when we examined it he was in pain and had little ability to move. For the position he plays, as a goalkeeper, and the fact that during the Olympics we have only 18 players and two goalkeepers, we had no other solution."

The Santos keeper, who is seen as Brazil's long-term No. 1, is the only capped goalkeeper in the squad, with Fiorentina reserve Neto now stepping-up to starting duties.

Rafael will now return to Brazil for further treatment, with recently signed AC Milan keeper Gabriel called into the squad as cover.
