Sturridge, 22, joined up with his British team-mates at the Olympic village on Monday after recovering from viral meningitis, but Pearce is not yet convinced that the Chelsea striker will be fit.

Pearce says he will make a final decision before Team GB play their final warm-up match against tournament favourites Brazil at Middlesbrough on Friday ahead of their opening game against Senegal at Old Trafford on July 26.

"There were doubts but he's joined up today and our fitness people are looking at him," Pearce said.

"The Chelsea medical people are happy with where he is but this week will be important for him. I've got to be 100% sure in my own mind that Daniel is ready to go and fit enough to see out a tournament.

"We've got until the 25th but I think a decision will be made this week, to give a new individual the best chance to bed in if required."
