Lopez has been linked with a move away from the Catania this summer, having spent part of last season on loan at AC Milan, with several Serie A clubs keen to acquire his services.
A statement from Sampdoria read: "An agreement between Sampdoria and Catania has been reached. The deal will be formalised once the player passes a medical. Maxi Lopez will move from Catania to Sampdoria on a temporary basis."
Lopez, 28, scored two goals in eight league appearances to help Milan finish runners-up in Serie A. The South American had hoped to remain at the San Siro on a permanent basis, but the Rossoneri opted not to exercise the right to buy the player.
