Vertonghen, 25, has been strongly linked with a switch to Tottenham his summer and on Tuesday the player's agent expressed his hope that an agreement will soon be struck.

But the Belgium international has suggested the deal is now off, with the defender prepared to return to training with Ajax ahead of entering the final year of his contract with the Eredivisie side.

"This is a shame. I thought that it would be sorted out much sooner," Vertonghen told Algemeen Dagblad."As it looks now, I'll be at Ajax on July 2. I'm hoping for a solution, but I'm not expecting a solution.

"I have one advantage: Ajax have got a good coach who knows me. I play in a good, stable squad. Let's become champions with Ajax for the third time in a row."

Vertonghen went on to outline his frustration after reports suggested his current terms at Ajax entitle him to 15% of his asking price - which is thought to be in the region of £9.6 million.

He said: "I'm shocked. The percentage is correct. It's unbelievable. I know that at Ajax a lot of things are leaking. When you hear it about other football players, you don't feel it. It's different when it's about yourself."

However, late on Wednesday, Ajax boss Frank de Boer indicated a deal remains a possibility. He said: "We're very close. But if the deal is not done, Jan must start his training next week with us.

"I was in the same situation [when he left Ajax for Barcelona in 1999]. But, eventually, I expect the deal will be done. I expect everything will be alright."
