Zenit St Petersburg have challenged Andrey Arshavin to prove to the club that they should strike a deal with Arsenal for his permanent signature.

Arshavin, 31, spent the second half of last season on loan at Zenit after struggling for form and regular playing time at his parent club Arsenal.

The Russia international scored three goals in nine starts for Zenit, and the club are set for talks with the Gunners over the midfielder's future.

"Everything depends on Arshavin. If Andrey is ready to stay in the team and go on the field as a player, we are ready to discuss it," said Zenit chief executive Maxim Mitrofanov.

"Arshavin is part of our club but, with all due respect to him, he will only stay in the event that he proves himself useful as an active player. Not as a man making up the numbers."
