Petkovic, who had a short spell at troubled Sion this year, replaces Edy Reja after the latter opted to step down despite a successful Serie A season.
Reja ensured Lazio avoided relegation in his first season at the helm before guiding them into Europe and then narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification with a fourth-placed finish this campaign.
However, Reja had a rocky relationship with president Claudio Lotito and previously offered to resign before finally walking away last month.
A short statement on Lazio's website confirmed the Bosnian coach Petkovic's appointment but there were no details on the length of contract.
