Sapong broke the deadlock with a volley from Kamara's cross before the latter headed home on 39 minutes to double Sporting's advantage.
Simon Dawkins netted a consolation for the Earthquakes, the midfielder curling in expertly with 20 minutes left on the clock.
The win leaves Kansas City two points and two places behind leaders DC United in the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference.
San Jose lie second in the Western Conference, two points behind Real Salt Lake.
