Roma are targeting the club's former striker (and now Catania coach) Vincenzo Montella as their new manager, according to director Walter Sabatini.

Montella led Catania to a respectable 11th-placed finish in the Serie A this season, while Roma finished outside of the European places in seventh and saw Luis Enrique leave his post at the end of the season.

Now Montella, who played for the Giallorossi from 1999 to 2009 and took over briefly from Claudio Ranieri as caretaker coach last season, is top of the list.

"We are thinking about Montella," Sabatini told Mediaset Premium. "He did very well at Roma and is doing very well at Catania, but he is under a contract. We will try to negotiate with Catania, but he is only one of the candidates."

However, Sabatini also insists the club are not necessarily looking for an Italian coach and refused to rule out the possibility of Athletic Bilbao's Argentine coach Marcelo Bielsa, saying: "Marcelo Bielsa? This is not a matter of nationality, we will decide regardless of that."
