Sir Alex Ferguson has decreed that he will instead be given a full summer's rest for the first time in three years before the start of the new season.

Hernandez's second campaign at Old Trafford was a disappointment compared to a stellar first term.

"His form last season was fantastic," said Ferguson on the club's official website. "He's found the second year more difficult, but a lot of that is down to not having a summer break for three years and playing every summer for his country.

"Next year he will be fine as we have agreed with the Mexican Football Association that he is going to get the requisite rest that he needs to perform in the Premier League."

Ferguson wants his players to have 28 days rest each summer, and Mexico's Olympics campaign finishes on August 1 at the earliest

Hernandez had initially been called up for London 2012 to occupy one of the three slots permitted for players aged over 23 and was even tipped to be flag-bearer for his country at the opening ceremony. Chicharito will still be involved in Mexico's two World Cup qualifiers at the start of June.

United have also written to the FA to say Stuart Pearce cannot select any of their over-age players for the British Olympic team apart from Ryan Giggs.

The club have ruled out Team GB coach Pearce picking Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes and Jonny Evans for the Olympic tournament at London 2012 as over-23 players.

According to a 2008 court ruling, clubs have the right to refuse to release players for the competition as it is not on the international calendar, but United are only taking that position on their over-age players.

Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling could be part of the Olympic squad if they are not picked for the England Euro 2012 squad.
