Garcia, 25, has impressed for Benfica since joining the club from Real Madrid in 2009 for €7 million on a five-year deal.

The Portuguese side have now moved to tie down the former Spain Under-21 international on fresh terms, amid rumours of interest from the likes of Manchester United.

Garcia is now contracted to Benfica until 2018, while reports claim his new terms include a €30 million release clause.

"I am grateful for the confidence the club have demonstrated in me," Garcia told the club's official website. "I intend to play for this club for many years. Now it is my dream to be the league champion and go very far in Europe."
