Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano believes Real Madrid cannot afford to slip up if they do not want to allow the Catalans to win La Liga.

Mascherano, 27, recognises that Barca's seven-point deficit is substantial with just 17 league fixtures remaining but says his side will capitalise as soon as Real fail to win.

"It is obvious that this is a big difference [between the two clubs], but we will fight until the end," the Argentinian said at a press conference.

"A draw for Madrid will put us back in the race if we win our matches. What we have to do is win our matches and wait for a slip-up from Madrid, although this will not be easy because they have a great team.

"But we have to keep in mind that the most important thing is what we do."

However, the former Liverpool midfielder also said Barca will not be bitter should Real succeed in winning their first league title since 2008, when Bernd Schuster was manager.

"If Madrid win all of their matches, we will obviously applaud and congratulate them for their great campaign," he added. "They will have deserved to win if that happens."

Mascherano signed for Barcelona in 2010 after four years in the Premier League with both West Ham and Liverpool.
