Kompany was dismissed on 12 minutes at the Etihad Stadium after referee Chris Foy deemed the defender's two-footed challenge on Nani an offence worthy of an immediate dismissal.

City went on to lose the match 3-2 and manager Roberto Mancini confirmed after the defeat that his side intended to appeal the four-match ban facing Kompany.

"City have today lodged an appeal with the Football Association relating to the red card issued to Vincent Kompany during Sunday's FA Cup tie with Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium," a statement released on the club's official website read.

"The FA have confirmed that a hearing will be held ahead of Wednesday evening's Carling Cup semi-final first leg at home to Liverpool."

Meanwhile, Sir Alex Ferguson believes Wayne Rooney's perceived attempt to influence the red card decision was within the limits of acceptable conduct.

"I have no complaints about Wayne," he said at the FIFA Ballon d'Or ceremony in Zurich. "I don't think it was unacceptable what he did. I think it was a natural reaction to a bad challenge from an opponent.

"But I can understand where Roberto's coming from because that's what happens with players today, they all appeal for penalties or players to be sent off, it's an unfortunate part of our game.''

Rooney himself said on Twitter: "Funny how people think i got kompany sent off. Im not ref. i didn't give red card. But it was a clear red card. 2 footed tackle."
