Nantes name Sergio Conceicao as new coach after Rene Girard exit

Former Portugal international Sergio Conceicao has been appointed coach of struggling Ligue 1 club Nantes.

Conceicao, 42, has signed a two-year contract with the club, which has been without a first-team boss since Rene Girard was relieved of his duties a week ago.

"He joins FC Nantes to take the reins of the first team and give it a positive dynamic," a statement confirming the appointment on Nantes' official website read.

Conceicao, who has previously coached Academica and Braga in his native country, left Vitoria Guimaraes by mutual consent at the end of last season.

The former Lazio and Inter Milan midfielder will watch Nantes' Ligue 1 game at home to Caen on Saturday before being presented to the media and his players the following day.

Philippe Mao, who oversaw last weekend's 2-0 defeat in Guingamp, will take charge of the team at the weekend before stepping aside.

Nantes are currently second-from-bottom of Ligue 1, two points adrift of safety.
