Mexico's preliminary 40-man Gold Cup squad includes 10 from Chivas

MEXICO CITY -- Liga MX defending champions Chivas have had nine of their players named to Mexico's 40-man preliminary Gold Cup squad, and a 10th Chivas contribution can be considered if Alejandro Mayorga is included in the mix.

Mayorga played this past season with Chivas' Second Division side, Chivas Premier; he's the only player on the list that has never played in the First Division, but is considered part of the club.

The list includes 13 players who are currently at camp, preparing to play against Honduras and the U.S. men's national team in World Cup qualifiers. Six of the current 29 players will leave camp after the game against the United States at Estadio Azteca and will not take part in the upcoming Confederations Cup.

As was expected, Mexico will participate in July's Gold Cup with an almost all Liga MX-based team, which includes the Houston Dynamo's Erick "Cubo" Torres. The squad has several of Mexico's brightest talents in 20-year-old defender Cesar Montes, 19-year-old defender/midfielder Edson Alvarez, 21-year-old midfielder Walter Sandoval, 21-year-old midfielder Erick Gutierrez and 23-year-old forward Angel Zaldivar.

In the forward position, Alan Pulido will reunite with Torres. Both participated in the 2011 U20 World Cup and started several matches as El Tri's two strikers.

The experience in the squad will be provided in the goalkeeping and defensive positions, which include players like Moises Munoz and Jose de Jesus Corona, who know what it takes to be Mexico's No. 1. While in defense players like Hugo Ayala and Jair Pereira will be the team's commanders from the back.

Rafael Marquez's name appears on this list, but all signs point that he will be in Mexico's final Confederations Cup roster, which is scheduled to go out later on Wednesday. Once that list is out, El Tri's final Gold Cup roster will gain more shape.
