Man United's Anthony Martial: Tough Jose Mourinho has improved me

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has said he is benefitting from Jose Mourinho's "hard" approach.

United manager Mourinho was critical of Martial last season, accusing the France international of failing to take chances and questioning his workrate.

Martial was occasionally left out of Mourinho's matchday squad, but the 21-year-old has started this season in impressive form.

He has scored six goals in 16 games, including four in the Premier League -- matching his league total for the previous campaign.

Martial's performances have earned him a recall to the France squad, and he believes Mourinho has played his part.

He told Premier League Productions: "He is hard with all of us and he is hard with me, there is no question.

"I know that it is for my benefit, but I also know that he really likes me as a person so there is no issue about the discipline being for the wrong reasons.

"Our objective, of course, is to have all of us in training and being fit to play every match, and that is what I'm hoping to do."

Martial started last season as a regular in the team before a dip in form saw him start just one Premier League match in October and November.

He was a linked with a January move to Sevilla and a summer transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.

But Martial said he and Mourinho understand each other better now than they did when the coach first arrived at Old Trafford.

He added: "At the beginning, we didn't know each other too well but over time we have got to know each other better.

"He knows my strengths and he knows my weaknesses, such as they are, but the outcome is that we are learning to give everything in the right way."
