Luke Shaw is set to get another chance to nail down a regular place in the Manchester United team, sources have told ESPN FC.
The defender is on the team's tour of the United States despite still recovering from the ankle ligament injury that ended his season. But he has been told by manager Jose Mourinho he has a chance of being the first-choice left-back for the upcoming season if he can prove his fitness.
United had made enquiries about Barcelona left-back Jordi Alba after the Spaniard fell out of favour under Luis Enrique towards the end of last season. But sources have told ESPN FC that Alba is more settled at Camp Nou after Enrique was replaced with Ernesto Valverde this summer.
It leaves Shaw, who was regularly criticised by Mourinho last season, with a chance to regain his starting spot once he is fully fit.
He has impressed Mourinho with his dedication to training and rehabilitation since returning to Carrington.
Shaw is not expected to play in the U.S., where Mourinho's team will play LA Galaxy, Real Salt Lake, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona.
United also have games scheduled against Valerenga in Oslo and Sampdoria in Dublin before the Super Cup against Real Madrid in Macedonia on Aug. 8.
There is an outside chance Shaw could be fit for the start of the season with United's medical team believing he is currently ahead of schedule.
At the very least, United are hoping he will have fully recovered, and be match fit, for the start of the Champions League in September.
