Bastian Schweinsteiger included in Man United's Europa League squad

Manchester United have added Bastian Schweinsteiger to their squad for the Europa League ahead of the knockout stage.

Teams were allowed to add up to three players to their "A" squad, and United chose to register Schweinsteiger and goalkeeper Joel Pereira, UEFA and the team confirmed on Thursday.

Jose Mourinho froze the former Germany captain out of the first team upon arriving in the summer, with the 32-year-old falling so far down the pecking order that United even wrote him off as an asset in their accounts.

However, Schweinsteiger has returned from the cold and, having made two substitute appearances, marked his first United start in more than a year by last weekend scoring in the 4-0 FA Cup fourth-round win against Wigan.

Pereira is also brought in despite reports of a serious knee injury that led to Dean Henderson's loan at Grimsby being brought to a premature end. They take the places of Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay who left the club in January.

Henderson was also curiously removed from United's "B list," reserved for players 21 or younger, after being added in November alongside Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, who was also omitted after remaining on loan at Wolverhampton.

Meanwhile, Tottenham's only change was to remove Tom Carroll, who completed his transfer to Swansea City last month.

United's full Europa League squad:

Goalkeepers: David De Gea, Sergio Romero, Joel Pereira, Kieran O'Hara

Defenders: Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, Daley Blind, Luke Shaw, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Antonio Valencia, Matteo Darmian, Axel Tuanzebe

Midfielders: Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Michael Carrick, Ashley Young, Ander Herrera, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Marouane Fellaini, Bastian Schweinsteiger

Forwards: Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford
