Rui Faria calls Mark Clattenburg's refereeing 'fantastic' in Man Utd draw

Manchester United assistant manager Rui Faria said there had been "fantastic work by the referee" Mark Clattenburg, after midfielder Ander Herrera was sent off in a 0-0 home draw against Burnley at Old Trafford.

Herrera received a second yellow card despite appearing to slip and try to pull out of a challenge midway through the second half.

Earlier, home manager Jose Mourinho had been sent to the stands, with the United camp having already been incensed by the failure to award Matteo Darmian a penalty, and the Portuguese did not attend his postmatch news conference.

Faria delivered just one line on Clattenburg, saying: "I just want to say fantastic work from the referee."

Discussing what happened with Mourinho's dismissal, Faria said: "I don't know and, to be fair, I don't think it's really important. What is important is what the referee will write in his report and, apart from that, I can't give you more details because it happened with them."

Mourinho initially went just a few rows back, but then went up to the directors' box, sitting alongside the players who were excluded from his matchday squad.

Discussing the performance, Faria said: "The team did fantastic work from the first second. We were dominant with 11 men. We were dominant with 10 men. We fought from the first second to get the result we wanted. That is the most important thing.

"It is important to score and we didn't, but we created. If you don't have chances, it's something we should worry about.

"Sometimes you create one, two chances and you win. Other times, you have 37 shots and can't score. Their goalkeeper [Tom Heaton] was the best player on the pitch."
