Vincent Kompany hopes Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy fit in at City

LOS ANGELES -- Vincent Kompany can't wait to see what new signings Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy bring to Manchester City after their thrilling season with Monaco.

New £43 million midfielder Silva is still yet to train with the first team after being given extra time off following the Confederations Cup with Portugal, while Mendy has just joined up with his new teammates in Los Angeles after finally completing his £52m switch.

Both players were crucial to Monaco's success last season when they won the French title and reached the semifinals of the Champions League -- knocking out City on the way.

"Monaco were one of the most attractive teams in Europe last season. Their attacking threat was incredible -- those guys did some damage against us!" Kompany said.

"Hopefully they'll be good players and they know what it is to play for an offensive team, so hopefully they'll fit right in here."

The arrival of Mendy took City's spending to over £200m this summer, with goalkeeper Ederson Moraes and full-backs Danilo and Kyle Walker also arriving at the club.

It's a major overhaul of the defence in particular with players such as Pablo Zabaleta, Gael Clichy and Aleksandar Kolarov leaving after long stays at the club.

"We've replaced some key players in the team that did a lot of good over the years," Kompany added. "But the important thing was replacing them with players of equal ability at least -- because they've been big players for us down the years.

"It's good to get some new guys, new faces, who are hungry to win. Everything is there to be achieved for them. But hopefully they will add that spark that we need to be the champions again.

"All the senior players have the responsibility to create an environment where these guys can thrive. We need these new guys to do well and help us achieve our goals."

One player who is back at the Etihad Stadium is midfielder Yaya Toure after agreeing a new one-year contract to remain at the club.

Kompany says the Ivorian fully justified the new deal and insists he is capable of having a major impact on City's pursuit of success this season.

"He is one of the most gifted players we've ever had at the club," he added. "He's one of very few players who can still dictate the tempo of a game.

"His passing is incredible and his physical ability too. He's been good in training -- it's another important year for him -- he's such a great guy to have around."

Kompany was speaking at the Manchester City Soccer Festival on the site of the club's long-standing community project in East LA.
