Man City name 16-year-old midfielder Phil Foden on bench against Celtic

MANCHESTER -- Phil Foden could become the first player to appear for Manchester City since the turn of the millennium after being surprisingly called up for the Champions League clash with Celtic on Tuesday night.

The 16-year-old was born on May 28, 2000, and will become City's third youngest ever player if he gets off the bench for the Group C game at the Etihad.

Pep Guardiola brought in a number of academy players for the game with City guaranteed a second-placed finish after their 1-1 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach last month.

Spanish youngster Pablo Maffeo and England defender Tosin Adarabioyo are in the starting XI while Angelino and Angus Gunn were on the bench alongside Foden.

City's record is held by defender Glyn Pardoe, who made his debut in April 1962 aged just 15 years and 314 days -- Foden is 16 years and 192 days.

There is huge excitement at the club about Stockport-born Foden, who joined City as a six-year-old. He has played for England at under-15, under-16 and under-17 level and made his debut for City's under-18s last season.

Foden plays as an attacking midfielder and is most comfortable in a No. 10 role but is a regular goal scorer and netted a late equaliser in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Manchester United for the U18s.

Celtic winger Patrick Roberts, who is on an 18-month-long loan from City, also starts for the Scottish champions.
