Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard among MLS All-Star selections

MLS commissioner Don Garber named former England internationals Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard to the 2015 MLS All-Star Game, despite neither having played an MLS match, on Monday.

MLS also announced its Fan XI list of All-Stars for the July 29 showcase between the league's best players and Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

Lampard, who plays for New York City FC, and Gerrard, of LA Galaxy, recently joined their teams as the latest big-name Designated Players of the league.

Lampard was to make his league debut in NYCFC's 4-4 draw with Toronto FC on Sunday, but was ruled out earlier in the week with a calf strain, while Gerrard has played only a friendly thus far with the Galaxy.

The Fan XI, as voted on by the fans, includes many of the league's top Designated Players, including recent arrival Kaka of Orlando City, with Seattle Sounders forward Obafemi Martins winning the "More Than a Vote" bid as determined by the number of goals fans scored with his character in the FIFA 15 video game.

Other notable inclusions to the list are first-time All-Stars David Villa, who joined NYCFC at the start of the season, and Benny Feilhaber, and four-time selection DaMarcus Beasley.

The Fan XI vote does not determine the starting XI for the game. Now that the voting is over, coach Pablo Mastroeni and Garber will fill out the roster.
