Liverpool's Jordan Henderson: Last season was the toughest of my career

PASADENA, Calif. -- Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has admitted that last season was the toughest of his career.

The skipper made just 23 starts in all competitions throughout the 2016-17 campaign having suffered foot and knee ligament injuries.

After limping off in the first leg of Liverpool's Europa League tie Borussia Dortmund in April, he returned to action on the final day of the Premier League and featured at this summer's European Championships with England.

When asked by the club's official website about the previous season being the most difficult he has endured, Henderson said: "For me personally, definitely, purely for injuries.

"The type of injuries I had were injuries where I was trying to get through it, even when I was playing I was trying to just play and maybe sometimes I shouldn't have.

"Overall, it was a very disappointing season for me personally and a tough one."

However, Henderson hopes that the upcoming campaign will see him return to his best with a good preseason under his belt.

"My foot is feeling good," he continued. "I've been injured for most of last season but, over the course of the summer, I've trained with England, played one game at [the Euros], and then afterwards done a little bit of my own [training].

"I've come in and I feel very good -- I feel probably the best I've felt in a long time. So hopefully that can continue and I can have a good preseason and get even fitter."

Henderson continued: "I was injured for quite a lot of the season, I was out for a lot, so I felt as if I didn't really need a rest.

"I tried to do a little bit and just build up to make sure that when I came back I was feeling good, and so far that's working well."
