Liverpool will be without the services of striker Daniel Sturridge for Wednesday's Champions League Group B showdown with Swiss champions Basel.

Sturridge, 25, has missed the last five matches with a thigh strain that he picked up on international duty and was not part of the travelling party which boarded a flight to Switzerland on Tuesday lunchtime.

The England international is now targeting a return for the visit of West Bromwich Albion to Anfield on Saturday, with Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert vying for a starting spot against Paulo Sousa's Basel.

France international defender Mamadou Sakho has also been left behind for the trip to Switzerland for disciplinary reasons.

Sakho, 24, left Anfield on Saturday when he was not selected in the matchday squad to face Everton in the Merseyside derby though he did later issue an apology.

Brendan Rodgers' side will be hoping to make it successive Champions League wins following their opening 2-1 victory over Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets Razgrad while Basel are looking for their first point after suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat to Real Madrid on matchday one.
