Lille ask for Anwar El Ghazi yellow over Abdelhak Nouri tribute to be rescinded

Lille have asked the French Football League (LFP) to rescind the yellow card shown to forward Anwar El Ghazi in Sunday's Ligue 1 win for removing his shirt to pay tribute to former teammate Abdelhak Nouri.

Nouri, 20, suffered severe and permanent brain damage after collapsing while playing for Ajax in a friendly against Werder Bremen in July.

El Ghazi, who moved to Lille in January, took off his shirt after scoring in Lille's victory over Nantes on Sunday to reveal a T-shirt emblazoned with Nouri's name and Ajax shirt number.

The 22-year-old was shown a yellow card by referee Benoit Millot in line with regulations, but Lille have pleaded mitigating circumstances in a bid to have the booking removed from the records.

"It was a strong and sincere gesture to which LOSC wishes to associate itself fully," a club statement read.

"Given the dramatic context that justified Anwar El Ghazi's gesture, LOSC has asked -- as an exception -- for the cancellation of the yellow card received by its player (for having taken his shirt off) by the LFP's Disciplinary Commission."

El Ghazi would face an automatic one-match ban if he were to receive three yellow cards within 10 appearances in domestic competition.
