Arsenal should have recruited different Leicester City scout - Gary Lineker

Gary Lineker believes Arsenal "nicked the wrong scout" in taking Ben Wrigglesworth from Leicester City to become their new first-team video scout.

Wrigglesworth announced this week he had left his role as Leicester's head of technical scouting to take on the new position at the Emirates.

But Lineker, a boyhood fan of the Foxes who played for the club between 1978 and 1985, says that it was not Wrigglesworth who masterminded the signing of players including Christian Fuchs, Ngolo Kante, Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy.

Asked by The Guardian to name his team of the season in the Premier League, Lineker said: "[Christian] Fuchs, for sure. Underrated, we got him on a free transfer. I love how Arsenal nicked the wrong scout. Ngolo Kante, for sure, Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy. Four at least.

"Steve Walsh is the guy who found these players and bought them in. I know when he found Mahrez he was sent to watch someone else and came back with Mahrez. He's done a brilliant job and that's been the large key to Leicester's success.

"As in all clubs, it's about the people you bring in and they've done it on a relatively small budget compared with the giants."

Lineker is trying not to think about the prospect of bigger clubs coming in for the club's star performers in the summer, instead happy that they have kept this squad together for an unlikely title challenge.

"I was just pleased that they managed to keep the whole squad together in the January window," he added. "I'm not worried about any danger in the summer -- if they win the league, that'll do.

"They could not even exist again after that and it wouldn't matter! It's just magical what's happened."
