Wayne Rooney out to end FA Cup drought as Man Utd host Arsenal

Wayne Rooney hopes he can finally realise his ambition of winning the FA Cup this season.

The Manchester United captain is in his 11th season at Old Trafford but, while he has won the Premier League five times, the League Cup twice and the Champions League once, he has never tasted success in the FA Cup.

Rooney revealed that, as a boyhood Evertonian, he had fond memories of seeing United lose the 1995 final to Joe Royle's Merseysiders.

Now he will lead Louis van Gaal's team against holders Arsenal, with a place at Wembley in the last four at stake for the winners.

"We have an FA Cup quarterfinal against Arsenal on Monday and that is massive for us," Rooney told United's official website. "We haven't been to a final for a few years, we want to try to win that game and we are looking forward to that.

"Of course, I think it is a massive trophy. It is a trophy that, growing up as a youngster, I used to love watching and I was fortunate enough to see Everton lift the FA Cup in 1995 when I was nine years old. It is something which I would love to do and hopefully it can be this year."

Meanwhile, manager Van Gaal has praised in-form Ashley Young, saying the versatile England international suits his "profile" of players.

Young scored United's late winner in Wednesday's 1-0 victory over Newcastle and has played as a winger, a wing-back and even a full-back for Van Gaal this season.

"He is a player who wants to perform what you say. I think he fits good in my profile," the Dutchman told MUTV. "We have played also with wing-backs and I think that is his best position. Now I use him as a winger and he does a very good job. I am pleased with him."
