Sporting Kansas City CEO Robb Heineman took to Twitter on Tuesday to dispel rumours about the MLS side's talks with Hamburg captain Rafael van der Vaart.

Van der Vaart, 32, will be out of contract in the summer and current signs suggest the Bundesliga club are not looking to extend his deal.

Hamburg sporting director Peter Knabel recently said that a decision about Van der Vaart's future will not be made before the end of March, while also announcing that the club are considering offering the player a brand ambassador role.

However, the midfielder, who left Hamburg for Real Madrid in 2008 before re-signing from Tottenham in 2012, still believes he has a few more years of professional football in him. Last month he played down reports linking him with a return to Ajax.

Van der Vaart was linked to Sporting Kansas City this week, according to reports in both kicker and Bild.

Kicker claimed that the 32-year-old has other MLS offers, but the paper also said that this would end his plans with the Netherlands national team, and thus may not be his first choice transfer.

Bild, meanwhile, reported that Kansas City had offered Van de Vaart 4.3 million euros, more than he currently earns at Hamburg.

According to the reports, MLS want him to become one of the faces of the league, although the player has not commented publicly.
