S.League: Tampines' Duric and Kwok hoping for goals against Young Lions

It is probably fair to say that there will be goals on show when Tampines Rovers FC take on the Courts Young Lions in the Great Eastern Yeo's S.League on Thursday night at the Jurong West Stadium.

After all, there have been at least three goals in each of their past seven encounters, six of which ended up in victories for the Stags.

Aleksandar Duric is a man who knows all about scoring against the developmental side, having netted five times for Tampines during that run.

For this upcoming clash, however, he will be watching on from the dugout as V. Sundramoorthy's assistant coach, a position he assumed after finally hanging up his boots at the end of last season.

The 44-year-old did so for the first time on Sunday as they beat fellow title contenders Albirex Niigata (S) 1-0 to record an opening victory -- an experience he described as "more difficult" than he had imagined.

"I thought sitting on the bench as a coach is easier, but I was telling [coach] Sundram that I was more nervous and anxious last night than I was as a player on the pitch!" Duric told ESPN FC.

While they came away with three points, it could have been a different outcome had the White Swans taken their chances early in the game.

With that in mind, Duric is keen to see Tampines display more ruthlessness in their first home game against the Young Lions, who had the league's second-worst defence -- with 54 goals conceded -- last season.

"We can only improve with each passing game. This season will be a closely fought affair so we do want more goals and hopefully... we will go all out not just to try and win but also to score some goals against the Young Lions," declared the Singapore legend.

Echoing that sentiment is new boy Fabian Kwok, who made his league debut as a Stag against the Japanese and was praised by the coaching staff afterward.

"We have great attacking players who are more than capable of producing goals," he said, referring to the likes of Mateo Roskam, Fabrice Noel, Noh Alam Shah and Indra Sahdan. "I hope that on match-day, they will all have their scoring boots on."

Former Geylang International captain Ridhuan Muhammad could feature after being suspended against Albirex while Roberto Alviz will add creativity, assuming the former Brunei DPMM midfielder receives his work permit in time to play.

The Young Lions last picked up points against Tampines in the league back in 2010 but Aide Iskandar's side will be encouraged by their opening 1-1 draw against Hougang United.

They could have won the tie had Iqbal Hussain not missed a penalty and the likely return of playmaker Shahfiq Ghani will boost their attacking options, with right-back Al-Qaasimy Rahman ready to come back from suspension as well.

Kwok knows their opponents cannot be underestimated, but the 25-year-old is confident that the "close-knit" environment at his new club will see them improve against the Young Lions.

"It's good that we managed to pull away with a win against Albirex, so that the spirits are high and our performance can only get better from here," he said. "Moving forward to our next game, we must continue to work together as a unit."
