New York City FC adding seats in Yankee Stadium's 300 level for opener

With ticket demand building for New York City FC's Major League Soccer home opener, the club have announced that additional seating will be made available at Yankee Stadium for the March 15 meeting with defending Eastern Conference champions New England Revolution.

The club says tickets will be available in the 300 level of the stadium for the team's inaugural home match. That level is not part of the 27,528 seats that will normally be available for the club's home matches.

With 25,000 tickets already sold for the game -- including the 14,000 season tickets purchased thus far -- NYCFC president Tom Gillick said the club was thrilled to expand available seating for fans.

"We are extremely pleased that so many New Yorkers want to be part of history and be there as we kick off in New York City," said Gillick in a statement on the club's website. "This is a landmark moment for our Club and for soccer in New York."

The team starts the season with David Villa as their key Designated Player, but will be bolstered by the arrival of Frank Lampard, who will join NYCFC this summer after the conclusion of his spell with Premier League title-contender Manchester City.

"We are extremely excited about playing in front of our fans in New York for the first time," said head coach Jason Kreis.

"We have had fantastic support throughout our preseason. For the team and for me, playing in front such a large crowd at Yankee Stadium is going to be very special."

The much-anticipated Yankee Stadium opener takes place on March 15, at 5 p.m. ET and will be shown on ESPN2 and WatchESPN.
