Schmidt: Leverkusen are in a strong position (1:24)

Roger Schmidt believes his side have secured a strong position in their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie with Atletico Madrid, after a 1-0 home win in the first leg. (1:24)

Hakan Calhanoglu is set to return to the Turkey national team after holding talks with coach Fatih Terim.

The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder -- who last played for the national team in a friendly against Republic of Ireland in May -- was threatened with a gun by a friend of his fellow international Goktan Tore in 2013.

In October last year, he told German television channel ZDF that Tore and the man had gained access to the hotel room he shared with Turkey and Leverkusen teammate Omer Toprak.

"I was hit and I was lying in a corner," he said. "He then came up to me and said: 'Don't move or I will shoot you.' I was curled up in the corner of the room -- I couldn't move, I was scared for my life."

The incident, quickly defused, happened in May 2013 after Turkey's loss against Netherlands in their last World Cup qualifier.

Calhanoglu said: "After this happened, we didn't want to end Gokhan's career so we kept quiet."

In October, Terim brought Tore back to his squad for a match against Czech Republic after a year away from the scene.

Calhanoglu and Toprak were also invited, but Leverkusen said they were injured and could not play.

But the Turkey coach watched Calhanoglu score the winner in the Champions League round of 16 first-leg victory over Atletico Madrid this week, and the player said he would be would be "playing for my home country again soon."

Tabloid newspaper Express reported that he met Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller and Calhanoglu's agent Bektas Demirtas for talks.

Calhanoglu told the paper: "I spoke to Fatih Termin on the phone today. We had a very good talk. We have sorted it out.

"I am delighted that I'll be playing for my home country again soon."
