New York City FC still want Barcelona's Xavi, Claudio Reyna says

New York City FC sporting director Claudio Reyna has suggested the club will return with another offer to sign Barcelona playmaker Xavi Hernandez this summer.

Xavi, 35, said in December that he had been close to leaving Barca for New York last summer before he eventually decided to stay and accept a squad-player role at the Camp Nou this season.

NYCFC are about to kick off their Major League Soccer campaign on March 8, with David Villa, Xavi's former Barcelona and Spain teammate, currently their biggest star, although Frank Lampard is due to join up with the club in the summer after finishing the season at sister club Manchester City.

Reyna told Catalan TV3 that the MLS club would be looking to bring in a third big-name this summer, and Xavi remained in their plans.

"We are very interested in 'franchise' players, like Xavi," the former Manchester City and United States midfielder said. "The door is not closed. We will see. For sure we will need to bring in a third 'franchise' player in the summer."

Xavi has started 14 of Barca's 30 games in all competitions so far this season, but El Confidencial has reported that a poor display in the 1-0 defeat at Real Sociedad in January marked a turning point in his relationship with Luis Enrique.

Since then, Xavi has played in just four of the club's 13 fixtures, and did not feature either in the 1-0 loss to Malaga at the weekend or Wednesday's 2-1 victory at Manchester City in the Champions League.

Mundo Deportivo has reported that Xavi's agent, Ivan Corretja, was recently in Manchester to discuss his client's future with City's former Barcelona directors Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain.
