Olympiakos midfielder Matthieu Dossevi has told RMC he does not understand why the Greek league has been suspended after violence at last weekend's Athens derby against Panathinaikos.

Dossevi, 27, played in the match, which saw Panathinaikos fans invading the pitch and delaying the start of the second half. A number of missiles were hurled at the visiting Olympiakos players as they lost 2-1.

The Greek government reacted to the incidents by suspending all top league matches scheduled for next weekend, and it is unclear when football will re-start.

"We're a little surprised," Dossevi, who joined Olympiakos from Valenciennes in the summer, said.

"If they want to change things they only have to suspend the team in question, Panathinaikos. Why stop the whole league? I don't know.

"When incidents happen in a stadium in other leagues, there are punishments which are handed out to the club concerned, but not to the whole league.

"I think their intentions are good, they want to change things -- but I don't see why everything needs to be stopped. What is annoying is that we are also victims of that."

On Tuesday, a meeting of the Greek Super League board on Tuesday was marred by a heated argument followed by a scuffle involving the presidents of the two clubs.

Stavros Kontonis, the deputy minister for sport in Greece's new left-wing government, said the suspension would be reviewed next week, but that games would again be called off if clubs failed to respond to demands for improved security.
