Former South Africa captain Neil Tovey suffers multiple heart attacks

JOHANNESBURG -- The South African Football Association says 1996 African Cup of Nations-winning captain Neil Tovey is in the hospital after suffering multiple heart attacks.

Local media reported the 52-year-old Tovey, also a former top-flight coach, had a heart attack on Tuesday and then had two more after being admitted to the hospital. It was reported that he had to be resuscitated.

SAFA said he was now recovering in the hospital near Durban.

Tovey captained South Africa to the African title two years after its first all-race elections, one of the country's best soccer moments.

SAFA also said Wednesday that one of Tovey's African Cup-winning teammates, John "Shoes" Moshoeu, was hospitalized in Johannesburg. SAFA didn't give details of the 49-year-old Moshoeu's illness.

SAFA said both men were "responding well to medication."
