Robin van Persie ankle injury sustained at Swansea to be assessed by United

Manchester United will assess Robin van Persie's ankle injury after he left Swansea's Liberty Stadium on crutches on Saturday.

The Netherlands captain was seen with his right foot and the bottom of his leg in a protective cast after United's 2-1 defeat.

Van Persie, United's 10-goal joint top scorer, has started 24 of their last 25 league games and been an automatic choice under manager Louis van Gaal.

He missed United's 3-1 FA Cup win over Preston last Monday with a minor injury before returning to the side at Swansea.

Of the three other specialist strikers in United's squad, Wayne Rooney has only scored once in 11 games, James Wilson has netted twice all season and Radamel Falcao's career in England has produced just four goals in 19 matches.

Van Persie renewed his rivalry with Ashley Williams on Saturday, two years after Sir Alex Ferguson accused the Swansea captain of deliberately kicking the ball at the Dutchman's head and claimed he was "lucky to be alive".

And Wales international Williams revealed the mascot at the weekend had asked him to stage an action replay.

He told newspapers: "That incident made me famous for a couple of days and it's what people always remind me about that day -- even the mascot asked me whether I could do it again."
