Manchester City needs strikers to start scoring goals to win Premier League

Manuel Pellegrini believes Manchester City cannot afford to drop any more points if they are to retain their Premier League title and told his strikers it is time they start scoring again.

City have only taken 49 points from their first 24 league games and Pellegrini feels they need 14 successive victories and a 100 percent record in the remainder of the campaign.

"Yes, of course," he said in a news conference. "When you have 42 points to fight for you must do it."

The Chilean takes heart from last season when Liverpool were fourth at the equivalent stage but won their next 11 matches and almost became champions.

"Arsenal had 55 points [at this stage 12 months ago] and Liverpool were eight points behind on 47," said Pellegrini. "Liverpool fought for the title until the end."

City's challenge has been hampered by a lack of goals from their specialist centre-forwards, who have not struck since Stevan Jovetic found the net against Sunderland on New Year's Day.

All three forwards have endured injury-hit campaigns and they have only scored one of City's last 20 goals in all competitions.

Sergio Aguero has not scored in five appearances since returning to fitness, while Jovetic has not struck in his last six games and Edin Dzeko's only goals this campaign came in September.

Pellegrini added: "Of course I expect more because normally they score a lot of goals. One of the big differences between last season and this one is that we scored a lot more goals last year.

"Edin had a very long injury in both calves. Aguero and Jovetic had injuries, we started just with three strikers because [Alvaro] Negredo was also injured while he was here. We've missed goals, especially here at home."

Pellegrini harked back to earlier in the campaign when Aguero was in peak form and City were being branded a one-man team.

"All of you ask if it was just a team that was only Sergio Aguero and without Sergio Aguero it was impossible to play," he said. "When Sergio wasn't fit, we continue winning all the games. Now he has come back and all of us are expecting that he will recover his normal performance."
