Seattle Sounders' Osvaldo Alonso could miss 6-8 weeks after groin surgery

Seattle Sounders midfielder Osvaldo Alonso could miss six to eight weeks after have groin surgery, coach Sigi Schmid says.

Alonso, who started all but one of the Sounders' regular-season games last season, underwent surgery on Saturday, and Schmid outlined the 29-year-old recovery plan on Monday.

"We're really happy that the surgery didn't have to be more extensive," Schmid said, according to the Seattle Times.

"It's really sort of a wait-and-see. On the outside, he could be out six to eight weeks -- but that's the outside.

"He could be back out on the practice field in two weeks. We really don't know."

Schmid said the surgery cleared up scar tissue that pushed on Alonso's nerves.

Seattle open the MLS season on March 8 at home against the New England Revolution.
